What the Grade 10 assessment book is

The Grade 10 assessment book is the record a teacher keeps of how a Grade 10 learner is progressing through the year — learning area by learning area, skill by skill. It is a record-keeping document, not a set of questions.

Grade 10 is the first Senior School year, and the record changes shape with it. Learners now follow a pathway — STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science — so the book covers the subjects that learner actually takes rather than a fixed list.

Looking for Grade 10 tests or past papers?

If you came here hoping for exam papers, revision questions or practice tests, this is not that document. An assessment book is mostly blank tables for a teacher to fill in; there are no questions inside it.

For actual Grade 10 test papers and revision material, go to our Exams & Assessments hub instead.

If you want the record book itself — the one a teacher completes each term — carry on below.

What is inside the Grade 10 book

The book covers the core subjects every Senior School learner takes alongside the subjects specific to their pathway, with a table for each. Down one side are the strands and sub-strands taught at Grade 10; across the top are the four CBC performance levels, plus room for the teacher's comment:

Alongside those tables the book carries learner and guardian details, a section for each of the three terms, an end-of-term summative grid pulling together CAT, mid-term and end-term results, space for teacher and head-teacher comments, and an end-of-year profile covering competencies achieved, strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement.

Because pathways differ, Grade 10 books vary by pathway. Check that the book you download matches the pathway the learner is following — a STEM book and an Arts and Sports book are not interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Grade 10 assessment book contain exams? No. It is a record book of blank score tables and comment boxes. For Grade 10 test papers, see our Exams & Assessments hub.

What do EE, ME, AE and BE mean? Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching and Below Expectation — the four CBC performance levels. A teacher records one per skill instead of a percentage.

Is it one book per learner? Yes. The book follows an individual learner through the year and carries their end-of-year transition profile.

Is it editable? Yes. You can add your school details, adjust the learning areas your school offers, and print as many copies as you need.

Is this the same as a report form? Not quite. This is the running record kept through the term; the report form is the summary that goes home. The report is usually written from what is in this book.
