What Grade 2 schemes of work cover

Grade 2 is the middle year of Lower Primary, building directly on the foundations laid in Grade 1 โ€“ early literacy, numeracy and social skills taught through integrated "Activities" learning areas rather than separate subjects. A scheme of work turns the KICD curriculum design for each learning area into a term-by-term, week-by-week plan: what to teach each week, the specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences, key inquiry questions, resources and assessment.

Our Grade 2 schemes of work are developed directly from the current KICD curriculum designs by educators trained and experienced in Lower Primary CBC implementation, then reviewed against those designs before publication. This page brings together the Grade 2 schemes of work for every learning area in one place. They come in editable Word format, so you can adjust the weeks, dates and activities to fit your school's calendar and your class, and they are kept in line with the current school calendar and the latest curriculum designs. Alongside the generic CBC-aligned schemes, our catalogue also includes versions developed with reference to specific KICD-approved publisher coursebooks โ€“ open the full set for a learning area below and check the file titles to find one matched to your school's textbook, where available. Use the links below to open the schemes for the learning area you need, or the button at the bottom for the full Grade 2 set.

Where a scheme of work fits in curriculum implementation

If you're studying curriculum implementation rather than teaching a class directly, it helps to see how these documents relate to each other. KICD publishes the curriculum design for each learning area and grade โ€“ the official document setting out strands, sub-strands, specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences, core competencies, values, Pertinent and Contemporary Issues, and assessment rubrics. A scheme of work takes that design and spreads it across the school calendar, term by term and week by week. A lesson plan then takes a single week's entry from the scheme and expands it into a full lesson. A record of work is completed afterwards, logging what was actually covered against what the scheme planned. In short: design โ†’ scheme of work โ†’ lesson plan โ†’ record of work.

The Grade 2 learning areas

Under the CBC Lower Primary timetable, Grade 2 covers eight learning areas, plus a foundational cross-cutting Literacy Activities category. KICD's latest curriculum review rationalised several of these โ€“ for example merging environmental subjects into Environmental Activities, and combining creative subjects into Creative Activities โ€“ so the list below follows this current, rationalised structure.

Literacy Activities โ€“ the foundational, cross-cutting literacy skills that underpin reading and writing across every language area. Grade 2 Literacy Activities schemes of work

English Language Activities โ€“ listening and speaking, reading, and early writing skills. Grade 2 English schemes of work

Kiswahili Language Activities โ€“ kusikiliza na kuzungumza, kusoma na kuandika (schools using Kenya Sign Language follow the KSL activities). Grade 2 Kiswahili schemes of work

Indigenous Language Activities โ€“ oral and listening skills in the learner's indigenous or community language. Grade 2 Indigenous Language Activities schemes of work

Mathematical Activities โ€“ number work, measurement and pattern, built through practical, activity-based learning. Read our detailed Grade 2 Mathematics hub for the full strand breakdown and what each week covers. Grade 2 Mathematics schemes of work hub

Environmental Activities โ€“ the current merged area combining the learner's social and natural environment, hygiene and nutrition. Grade 2 Environmental Activities schemes of work

Creative Activities โ€“ the current merged creative area covering art and craft, music and movement. Grade 2 Creative Activities schemes of work

What every Grade 2 scheme of work contains

Whichever learning area you pick, each Grade 2 scheme is built the same way, from the KICD design for that area: the strands and sub-strands broken into weekly lessons, with specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences, key inquiry questions, learning resources and assessment. The schemes also mainstream the CBC core competencies โ€“ communication and collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and imagination, citizenship, digital literacy, learning to learn, and self-efficacy โ€“ along with values and Pertinent and Contemporary Issues, woven into everyday learning rather than taught separately.

How the schemes map across the three terms

Each learning area's scheme spreads its strands across Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 and builds in assessment and revision. Because Grade 2 sits between the very first year of formal schooling and the transition toward Grade 3, the year consolidates early foundational skills while gradually building independence. For the exact weekly sequence in your term, open the learning area you need above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these schemes aligned to the latest KICD curriculum designs? Yes. Every Grade 2 scheme of work in our catalogue is developed directly from the current KICD curriculum design for that learning area, reviewed before publication, and kept in line with the current school calendar.

What's the difference between a scheme of work and a lesson plan? A scheme of work spreads a curriculum design across the term and year, week by week. A lesson plan expands one week's scheme entry into a single, fully detailed lesson.

Do the schemes follow a particular textbook or publisher? Some do. Our catalogue includes both generic CBC-aligned schemes and versions developed with reference to a specific KICD-approved publisher coursebook. Where a scheme has been developed against a particular book, that publisher or title is named in the file's title, so open the learning area's full set and check the titles to find the version that matches your school's textbook.

I've been asked to download this on behalf of a teacher or school โ€“ how do I know I have the right file? Use the grade, learning area and term shown on this page to confirm you have the correct document before downloading, and check the file name against what you were asked for.
