Grade 4 Mathematics Exams & Assessments – 2026 (CBC)

What the Grade 4 Mathematics exams and assessments cover

These Grade 4 Mathematics assessments test the four strands from the KICD curriculum design – Numbers, Measurement, Geometry and Data Handling – across the sub-strands covered each term. They give you end-of-term exams, mid-term tests and continuous-assessment tasks so you can check whether each learner is meeting the specific learning outcomes, and see early where a learner needs more support. Papers come with answer keys or marking guides for faster, more consistent grading.

Assessment under CBE: what has changed

The Kenya National Examinations Council, as the national assessment body, has realigned assessment to the curriculum through the Competency Based Assessment Framework. Competency Based Assessment (CBA) puts weight on formative assessment – assessment for learning – alongside end-of-term exams, and it assesses higher-order skills and the ability to apply Mathematics in real contexts, not just recall. In Mathematics this matters: the KICD design itself suggests assessment through oral, written or observation methods against the assessment rubrics, so a good assessment picture is more than one exam mark.

How Grade 4 Mathematics is graded: BE, AE, ME, EE

Competency Based Assessment reports each learner against four performance levels rather than a percentage:

This scale is used across every strand and grade. Because it is skill-specific, a rating tells you exactly where to focus – a learner might be ME in Numbers but AE in Geometry, which points your re-teaching precisely. CBE deliberately moved away from class rankings so the focus is on whether each learner is meeting the expected competency, not on comparing them to classmates.

Using these assessments well

The most useful assessment is planned at the start of the term, not the night before the exam. Build or download the papers and rubrics against the specific learning outcomes for the strands you will cover that term, so your teaching and assessment are aligned from the start. These Grade 4 Mathematics papers are organised by term and by strand, so you can assess Numbers after the number sub-strands, Measurement after measurement work, and so on – with a fuller paper at the end of each term.
