What the Grade 4 Science & Technology schemes of work cover
Grade 4 is the first year of upper primary, where Science & Technology becomes a distinct learning area rather than part of the integrated Environmental Activities of lower primary. The schemes of work turn the KICD curriculum design into a week-by-week teaching plan for the whole year โ Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 โ with the specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences, key inquiry questions, learning resources and assessment for each week.
At this level the subject is practical and inquiry-led: learners observe, ask questions, carry out simple investigations and relate what they find to everyday life at home and school. The schemes come in editable Word format, so you can adjust the weeks, dates and activities to fit your school's calendar and your class, and they are kept in line with the current school calendar and the latest KICD curriculum design.
The three strands of Grade 4 Science & Technology
Grade 4 Science & Technology is organised into three strands, covered across a suggested 120 lessons in the year:
- Living Things and their Environment โ Plants, Animals, and the Human digestive system. Learners study the living world around them and their own bodies, building the observation and classification skills the rest of the subject depends on.
- Matter โ Properties of matter, Management of solid waste, and Water conservation. Learners explore what things are made of and connect that to real environmental responsibility โ sorting waste and using water wisely.
- Force and Energy โ Force and its effects, Light, and Heat. Learners meet the everyday physics of pushing, pulling, seeing and warming, through simple hands-on activities rather than formal formulae.
Each sub-strand carries a suggested number of lessons in the design, but KICD notes the count per sub-strand may be more or less depending on your context โ so treat the weekly spread in the scheme as a guide you can adapt.
What learners should be able to do
By the end of Grade 4 Science & Technology, the learner is working towards being able to: explore the living and non-living things in their environment; carry out simple scientific investigations to answer everyday questions; apply basic ideas about matter, force and energy in day-to-day life; and develop values and competencies โ such as responsibility for the environment โ alongside the subject knowledge. The design frames Science & Technology as the foundation for Integrated Science and the STEM pathways learners meet later in Junior School.
What every Grade 4 scheme of work contains
Whichever term you are planning, each Grade 4 Science & Technology scheme is built the same way, from the KICD design: the strands and sub-strands broken into weekly lessons, with specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences, key inquiry questions, learning resources and assessment. The schemes also mainstream the CBC core competencies โ communication and collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and imagination, citizenship, digital literacy, learning to learn, and self-efficacy โ along with values and Pertinent and Contemporary Issues, woven into everyday learning rather than taught separately.
How the schemes map across the three terms
Because each week in the scheme is tied to specific learning outcomes from the design, your teaching stays aligned to what learners are actually assessed on. The scheme spreads the three strands across Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 and builds in assessment and revision. For the exact weekly sequence in your term, use the term-specific file from the catalogue below.
Publisher-aligned and general versions
Alongside the general CBC-aligned schemes, we also stock schemes developed against specific KICD-approved coursebooks, so you can match the scheme to the book your school uses. Both live under the same catalogue link below โ open it and check the file titles to pick the version you need.
