What the PP2 Mathematics schemes of work cover
PP2 (Pre-Primary Two) is the final pre-primary year, where children build the pre-number and early number skills they need to transition into Grade 1. At this level Mathematical Activities are play-based, activity-based, inquiry-based and theme-based – learners sort, match, count and compare using real objects and everyday routines, not written exercises.
The PP2 Mathematics schemes of work turn the KICD curriculum design into a week-by-week teaching plan for the whole year – Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 – with the specific learning outcomes, suggested learning experiences, key inquiry questions, learning resources and assessment for each week. They come in editable Word format, so you can adjust the weeks, dates and activities to fit your school's calendar and your class, and they are kept in line with the current school calendar and the latest KICD curriculum design.
The four strands of PP2 Mathematics
PP2 Mathematics is organised into four strands, covered across a suggested 150 lessons in the year:
- Pre-Number Activities – Sorting and Grouping, Matching and Pairing, Ordering, and Patterns. These come first because they build the thinking skills (comparing, classifying, sequencing) that number work depends on.
- Numbers – Rote Counting, Number Recognition, Counting Concrete Objects, Number Sequencing, Number Value, Number Writing, Putting Together (early addition) and Taking Away (early subtraction). This is the largest strand.
- Measurement – Sides of Objects, Mass (heavy and light), Capacity, Time (daily routines), Money (Kenyan coins), and Area (surface of objects), all explored practically with real objects.
- Geometry – Lines and Shapes: identifying and forming lines and simple shapes using concrete objects.
Notably, at PP2 Pre-Number Activities is a full strand in its own right – the foundation the whole year is built on – before learners move into formal Numbers.
What learners should be able to do
The design sets out the subject general learning outcomes for PP2. By the end of Pre-Primary Two, the learner should be able to: use classroom skills to solve problems in daily life; demonstrate basic number concepts as a basis for future learning; develop interest in measurement; use basic geometrical concepts as a foundation for future learning; develop values and competencies for harmonious co-existence; and manage pertinent and contemporary issues. The maths concepts and skills learned at PP2 are a prerequisite for a smooth transition to Grade 1.

How PP2 Mathematics is assessed
Assessment at PP2 is observation-led and practical, using the methods the design suggests – observation schedules, observation checklists, projects, portfolios, short written tests and an assessment rubric. The rubric reports each learner against performance levels (from below expectations up to exceeding expectations) for each skill, so you can see exactly which sub-strand a learner needs more support on rather than reducing them to a single mark.
